THE POSITION. The Department of Nursing seeks a nurse professional experienced in developing and leading graduate nursing curricula with an interprofessional focus and a prior record of teaching graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels. The Program Director is responsible for developing and finalizing course schedules, working with graduate advisors and the Undergraduate Program Director in recruiting students and facilitating student progress, leading undergraduate program review and annual reporting, coordinating accreditation activities, facilitating professional development opportunities for students, and attending monthly program director and Undergraduate Council meetings. In addition, the program director works closely with the department chair in annual faculty review and professional development and with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education. The Graduate Program Director will conduct other duties as needed and teach relevant courses.

THE DEPARTMENT. As of July 2022, Dr. Chaudron Carter Short has been appointed Chair and Director of the Department of Nursing. This unique and strategic dual appointment of a health system executive will provide nursing students an exceptional opportunity to work alongside Temple nurses to gain critical clinical training. We are also excited to strengthen our already deep ties between the College of Public Health and Temple University Health System. The Department aims to be a leading force in community-engaged, collaborative efforts to achieve health equity and high quality of life for all, preparing a diverse nursing workforce who excel in leadership, practice, research and scholarship. We aspire to provide excellence in academic programming that is responsive to the health needs of individuals and populations within the context of community, defined as a social and physical environment where living occurs. We are committed to the highest level of prevention-oriented and evidence-based caregiving, provided in collaboration with the community and other professionals and disciplines.
The Department of Nursing enrolls nearly 500 students annually and offers two accredited programs. Our eight-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with freshman admission is recognized for its high NCLEX pass rate, clinical affiliations with outstanding healthcare facilities in the Philadelphia area with a service-learning focus. Our Doctor of Nursing Practice program includes post-baccalaureate and post- master’s options with concentrations in Adult Gerontology Primary Care and Family-Individual Across the Lifespan. The post-master’s program prepares graduates for leadership roles in various settings. Expansion of graduate program offerings is anticipated and will include additional DNP specialties, post-master’s certificates and a direct-entry master’s program for non-nursing college graduates.
THE COLLEGE. Devoted to an interprofessional environment for education, research, and practice, the CEPH- accredited College of Public Health consists of academic units in the public health disciplines, health professions, and the School of Social Work, enrolling approximately 4,200 students. The College’s research aims to understand the fundamental factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations by examining
health problems through foundational research, policy and practice, and the development and dissemination of evidence-based interventions. We focus on social determinants of health and social justice with strengths in cancer, obesity, HIV, substance abuse, mental illness, mobility research, cognition and language, developmental disabilities, organ transplantation and aging. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, and other major private foundation, state and federal agencies. The College is home to an Office for Community Engaged Research and Practice, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, and the Collaborative on Community Inclusion. The Office of Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education leads our clinical activities, including the COVID-19 RapidVax effort and forward- looking IPE within the College and throughout the university. The College is staffed by a robust complement of seasoned professionals including offices of Communications and Marketing, Information Technology, Sponsored Research, and Academic Affairs. Temple’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching provides outstanding programs and one-on-one mentoring to instructors to promote and support excellent teaching.
THE UNIVERSITY. Temple University is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s sixth largest city. QUALIFICATIONS AND INTERESTS. Candidates should have earned a terminal degree in nursing, hold current nursing licensure (preferably as an APRN) or be eligible in Pennsylvania, and bring at least five years of clinical/practice experience. We prefer candidates with at least three years of academic teaching experience, including didactic courses in person or online, as well as clinical teaching/supervision in hospital and community health settings. Applications from experienced program directors are highly desirable; however, we will consider applicants with career trajectory and preparation for academic administrative positions. Candidates will satisfy expectations for the rank of assistant, associate or full professor. Classification of the appointment as tenure or non-tenure track will depend on the qualifications and preferences of candidates.
